Why Does It Matter When Species Go Extinct

We are surrounded by endangered species every day. Majestic tigers grace posters on bedroom walls, stuffed toy pandas stare blankly from shopping mall shelves; with the click of a button, we can watch the elaborate courtship rituals of  whooping cranes  and the strategic hunting habits of the  Amur leopard  on the  Discovery Channel. No matter where we look, images and information about the worlds rarest animals are readily available,  but do we ever stop to think about the effects endangered species have on their environments, what happens after they disappear? Lets face it, few of us have crossed paths with a real, live  endangered species today—one that is teetering on a tightrope of existence, like the  Santa Barbara Song Sparrow  or the Jovan Rhino— much less consider the implications of their loss. So, does it really matter if an animal goes extinct when we can still watch it on television, even after its gone? A single species disappearance can, in fact, make a huge difference on a global scale. Like pieces of yarn in a woven tapestry, the removal of one can start unraveling the whole system. The Worldwide Web Before the internet, the worldwide web could have referred to the intricate systems of connections between living organisms and their environments. We often call it the food web, although it encompasses many more factors than just diet. The living web, like a tapestry, is held together not by tacks or glue, but by interdependence—one strand stays in place because it is entwined with many others. The same concept keeps our planet working. Plants and animals (including humans) depend on each other as well as microorganisms, land, water, and climate to keep our entire system alive and well. Remove one piece, one species, and small changes lead to big problems that arent easy to fix. In the words of the World Wildlife Fund, When you remove one element from a fragile ecosystem, it has far-reaching and long-lasting effects on biodiversity. Balance and Biodiversity Many endangered species are top predators whose numbers are dwindling due to conflicts with humans. We kill predators all over the world because we fear for our own interests, we compete with them for prey and we destroy their habitats to expand our communities and agricultural operations.   Take for example the effect human intervention had on the gray wolf  and the subsequential effects their dwindling population numbers had on its environment and biodiversity. Before a mass extermination effort in the U.S. that decimated wolf populations in the first half of the 20th century, wolves kept other animals populations from growing exponentially. They hunted elk, deer, and moose and also killed smaller animals such as coyotes, raccoons, and beavers. Without wolves to keep other animals numbers in check, prey populations grew larger. Exploding elk populations in the western United States wiped out so many willows and other riparian plants that songbirds no longer had sufficient food or cover in these areas, threatening their survival and increasing numbers of insects like mosquitos that the songbirds were meant to control. Oregon State University scientists point to the intricacy of the Yellowstone  ecosystem, reported EarthSky in 2011. The wolves prey on the elk, for example, which in turn graze on young aspen and willow trees in Yellowstone, which in their turn provide cover and food for songbirds and other species. As the elks fear of wolves has increased over the past 15 years, elk browse less—that is, eat fewer twigs, leaves, and shoots from the parks young trees—and that is why, the scientists say, trees and shrubs have begun recovering along some of Yellowstones streams. These streams are now providing improved habitat for beaver and fish, with more food for birds and bears. But its not only large beasts of prey that can impact the ecosystem in their absence, small species can have just as big of an effect.   Extinctions of Small Species Matter, Too While the losses of large, iconic species like the wolf, tiger, rhino, and polar bear may make for more stimulating news stories than the disappearance of moths or mussels, even small species can affect ecosystems in significant ways. Consider the meager freshwater mussel: There are nearly 300 species of mussel in North American river and lakes, and most of them are threatened. How does this affect the water we all depend on? Mussels play an important role in the aquatic ecosystem, explains the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Many different kinds of wildlife eat mussels, including raccoon, otters, herons and egrets. Mussels filter water for food and thus are a purification system. They are usually present in groups called beds. Beds of mussels may range in size from smaller than a square foot to many acres; these mussel beds can be a hard cobble on the lake, river, or stream bottom which supports other species of fish, aquatic insects and worms. In their absence, these dependent species settle elsewhere, lower the available food source for their predators and in turn cause those predators to leave the area. Like the gray wolf, even the small mussels disappearance acts like a domino, toppling the entire ecosystem one related species at a time. Keeping the Web Intact We may not see wolves on a regular basis, and nobody really wants a poster of a Higgins eye pearly mussel on the wall, but the presence of these creatures is interwoven with the environment we all share. Losing even a small strand in the web of life contributes to the unraveling of our planets sustainability, the fine balance of biodiversity that affects each and every one of us.

This statement about the spotlight is referring to media speciation. Society as a whole has created stereotypes on what they believe gender is. A girl is expected to play with dolls, have long hair, and other expectations that as a society we view as feminine traits. A boy is expected to like to play in the dirt, have short hair, and be athletic. Dominion of Death For years and years; death was something that people saw as the only â€Å"gateway† to what they believed to be the afterlife or heaven. Believing that god would grant them access to heaven if they were to live holy and sinless lives. However towards the beginning of the 20th century this belief started to weave towards the belief that the afterlife would be the eternal end of ones life on physical earth, with some even believing that there wouldn’t be an afterlife. Padgett-Giorda Critical Research Essay on Shel Silverstein While many will point to poets such as Robert Frost and Sylvia Plath when speaking intellectually about the work that was produced by their pens, one should not overlook the valuable contributions of Shel Silverstein. From his first publication, The Giving Tree, to his final work, Falling Up, Silverstein entertained generations of children and parents alike with his use of poetry. His work, specifically in 1981’s A Light in the Attic, has been used as the backbone for many educators’ introduction of poetry to students. Entries like â€Å"Hot Dog,† â€Å"Homework Machine,† â€Å"Superstitious,† â€Å"Messy Room,† and â€Å"The Sitter† work on many levels with multiple†¦show more content†¦While the machine has good intentions from the start, it does not turn out so well: â€Å"Here it is— ‘nine plus four?’ and the answer is ‘three.’† (Silverstein 57) We see a morality to his craft. In a world where so many people stress perfection, he was trying to show the importance of imperfection to readers, parents and educators alike. By the time A Light in the Attic was released, Silverstein knew who would be reading his writing. The publication was his second collection, and many were already familiar with him and his writing. He knew the positive effect he could have on teachers and others that would eventually influence young minds themselves. He used his poetry as a pedestal. â€Å"Homework Machine† was a prime example of that intention. In the prime of writing career, Silverstein was counted on to help relay a combination of entertainment, education and morality to children that few have the ability to convey. Silverstein’s creative use of the English language reappears in the poem â€Å"Hot Dog.† Drawing parallels between a hot dog and a normal dog, he envisions what changes a boy and his family would have to make if they were to keep a hot dog as a pet as opposed to the latter. Obviously, this is where the entertainment value of the poem takes place. The real reasons for teenage crime in the 21st century are poverty, home issues and acceptance. These factors contribute to teenage crime because they need to steal simply to survive. Teenagers try to forget about the traumas at home by doing other things that could be just as bad, like binge drinking. They want to be accepted by their peers, who could already be a criminal. Many families nowadays are very poor and will get poorer, from the rising of interest rates and many other things. This will cause the poor to become even poorer, with less chance of making their way up the ladder without needing to steal. These teenagers do not even have the basic needs such as food or shelter, and so of course they will result in things like stealing. Otherwise, they simply will not be able to survive. Many students come to school everyday without even having a notebook or pens or paper. Some, who are slightly more fortunate, cannot pay for the many excursions that schools have. Those who do not have those simple everyday things will simply need to steal or carjack. These families truly need things which they do not have. These families often live in poorer parts of the cities, where more robberies and stealing will exist. Those teenagers would be considered lucky compared to others, because some teenagers don’t even have a home to live in. Hundreds of teenagers face numerous challenges at home, such as things like not keeping up to their school and parent’s academic standards which seem small to events like divorce or even becoming an orphan. The teenage crimes suddenly appear to increase because most of these teenagers are trying to forget about the traumas at home, by doing things that could catch their parent’s attention or simply trying to rebel and forget about their home life. These numbers are constantly increasing and are shocking to hear about. However, part of the problem is that parents are not teaching their children and teenagers the right thing to do. Some are just simply not caring enough and are too absorbed in their own stress. Many teenagers are trying to deal with problems at home by doing things that are worse. Acceptance is a huge goal for many girls and boys. Everyone hates to be left out or be called bad names, so teens do what they think is right to join in and be accepted. However, these wrongdoings do not help at all, and can make the situation worse. Teenagers can and will become aggressive and might try to join a gang. This will make them have a sense of belonging, which is what many kids and teenagers these days need. Being neglected for too long, they will do absolutely anything to be doing the right thing. Most of the time, it is doing things that are bad and cause crimes and other damage or problems. Many teenagers go to suburban parties where they get drunk. This can lead to many different problems such as drink driving or even teen pregnancy.
